These systems can be seen serving electricity control systems, sewerage control systems and such have been trust which has been entrusted with these systems that now SCADA in the water industry has become inseparable part.

With the deployment of SCADA in the water system the maintenance costs have reduced to great extent along with the time taken to diagnose the fault. The underlying principle of SCADA in the water industry is same as of SCADA systems in general.

There are present remote sensors which collect the data and via a transmission media send the collected data to a central system which carries out the task of management, processing and display of the collected data in human readable format. The data gets displayed at Man Machine Interface, also called MMI. The brain of every SCADA system lies in PLCs which is acronym for Programmable Logic.

SCADA can be also visualized as a system having various data elements known as points. Generally point refers either to monitor or to sensor. Points are further categorized as hard points or soft points. An actual/ real monitor acts as hard points and the records created for maintaining history are refereed as hard points.

Another key feature of SCADA systems are every system has a user interface, also known as human machine interface (HMI). It can be thought as the place where the data collection gets processed and presented in a human readable format. At HMI, human intervention can take place when necessary. Also HMI can be also linked with a database which provides graphs, statistical as well as logical information.

General Directions for SCADA in the Water Industry

All SCADA systems work on one principle. Remote sensors collect data and central system processes them. The central system stores data which can be analysed at a later stage and is known as SCADA Historian data analysis.

The analysed data is presented in human readable format at Man Machine Interface, often abbreviated as MMI. These tasks are performed with special software. The record which gets collected on hourly basis (or any predefined period) is scrutinized as well as SCADA Historian data analysis is undertaken with the purpose of process optimization. For SCADA Historian data analysis to be carried out the main requisite is existence of database as it is acts as repository for processing of data.

The applications for SCADA Historian data analysis are generally written in either VB or Microsoft C and the data is entered into database either manually or through the remote sensors. Generally, the software creates time sampled records which can be easily scrutinized with the purpose of process optimization. The reports generated are either event based (report is generated on occurrences of particular event) or time based (report is generated every hour).
