Scada in the gas industry

Foreign Countries gas operations face a number of important challenges, for example remote assets, unreliable communications, high costing and implications of safety as to having people overseas that face the challenge on a daily basis. The most complex of challenges that are faced in the gas industry would have to be the accounting area together with the multiple tax as well as royalty regimes during one operation.

The Gas Industry is also faced with a combination of regulatory, environmental, political as well as economic situations.

The Security Challenge; may be, occurrence of cyber-attack or intrusion, this may be accidental or intentional but has however increased over the past few years. The preservation of the honor of the gas industry on a global scale is fundamental, for the continuation of ongoing business, safety of the public, the interest of national security as well as both the National and Global economy.

Then the data gets processed and managed in human readable format. The data being processed (mainly the main and important parameters) is displayed at SCADA screens in form of graphical representation along with textual representation. This interface is known as Human Machine Interface (HMI) or Man Machine Interface (MMI).

Thus, it is evident that SCADA screens are important as only at them the data can be read in human readable format and any human intervention can take place at this interface only.

Now many kind of software have been developed which have made creation of SCADA screens hassle free. These software are platform dependent and generally are windows based. These software are easy to use and have made process of development of SCADA screens faster and efficient as they allow import of bitmap images as background of SCADA screen.

If the project encompasses large area to be surveyed and human surveillance in not possible in such case, then one needs long distance SACDA radio networks to be employed for sending the data collected from remote sensors to central unit.

When area under surveillance is hundreds of kilometres such as in case of petroleum pipeline, the only feasible solution is long distance Scada GSM.  Most important requisite for long range Scada GSMs is ability to transmit the data to long distance.

For such purposes, repeaters are used as line of sight is limited to 5 miles. Repeaters are radio transmitters which act as boosters for signals as signals tend to get weak after travelling certain amount of distance. Thus repeaters boost the attenuated signals and again transmit them to next repeater/ central system.
